Leave at home or take away?

If the ferrets had their way, they’d love to go on vacation with you. They are less tied to a place than cats, for example, and find new, unfamiliar places extremely exciting. However, there are a few things to think about when you want to take your leprechauns with you on vacation. In some cases it may be better to leave them at home.

Many hotels and holiday homes are now used to dogs or cats and have nothing against accommodating the furry friends together with their owners. However, ferrets are less common as pets. It is therefore essential to inquire at the accommodation of your choice whether you are allowed to bring your animals with you – even if pets are generally allowed there.
Taking ferrets with you: Prepare for vacation
Once you have found accommodation that does not object to keeping ferrets, the next step is to prepare. So that your animals don’t lack for anything on holiday, you should pack the following equipment with you:
● cage / enclosure
● sleeping cottage
● litter boxes
● Stray
● bowls
● Lining
● toys
● Vaccination card
● Official veterinary health certificate (when traveling abroad)
It is best to travel with the ferrets in the car. Lay out the Kobold’s usual transport boxes with a soft cloth and store the boxes safely on the back seat. It would be too stuffy for the animals in the trunk. It must not get too hot, and the ferrets must not be exposed to draughts. On longer journeys, the animals may feel more comfortable if you transport them directly in the cage. Plenty of fresh water should be available to your frets during the journey.
Finally on target: Make your vacation spot safe for ferrets
Before you get the ferrets out of the car, take a good look around the hotel room or holiday home. Find a good spot for the ferret cage and check the spaces for potential hazards. If you are sure that nothing can happen to your animals, set up the enclosure and the necessary equipment so that your furry friends can feel at home.
At the resort, walks with the ferrets on a leash are also possible, provided they are used to it. For the curious goblins, this is a great treat. But only if they don’t have to walk on asphalt or hot sand – so a beach holiday with ferrets is not a good idea.
Leave ferrets at home on vacation: Find pet care
It is therefore very expensive to go on holiday with the ferrets. If, despite thorough, early planning, there is no way to do this, you can have your animals cared for at home. Ideally, your friends or family members will have time to fill in as ferret sitters. At best, they already know the animals themselves. Nevertheless, write down everything important and also write down the telephone number of the veterinarian and your contact details at the holiday destination.
In addition, there are professional ferret sitters who can look after your furry friends. In our guide “Finding a cat sitter: 3 tips for making the right choice” you will find a few tips for good holiday care for cats that can be transferred to ferret care. If necessary, contact the nearest ferret aid center – they will be happy to help you.
